if it were not for : 가정법 과거 대체

" ~~~가 없다면 " 의 의미로, 가정법 과거를 대체한다.

 

If it were not for

= were it not for

= but for

=without

 

아래 각 문장을 "were it not for", "but for", 그리고 "without"을 사용해서 바꿔보자.(현재로 해석)

1. If it were not for my alarm clock, I would be late every day.(내 알람 시계가 없다면, 나는 매일 늦을 거야.)
   • Were it not for my alarm clock, I would be late every day.
   • But for my alarm clock, I would be late every day.
   • Without my alarm clock, I would be late every day.
2. If it were not for the rain, we could go to the park.(비가 오지 않는다면, 우리는 공원에 갈 수 있을 텐데.)
   • Were it not for the rain, we could go to the park.
   • But for the rain, we could go to the park.
   • Without the rain, we could go to the park.
3. If it were not for your help, I couldn’t finish my homework.(네 도움이 없다면, 나는 숙제를 끝낼 수 없었을 거야.)
   • Were it not for your help, I couldn’t finish my homework.
   • But for your help, I couldn’t finish my homework.
   • Without your help, I couldn’t finish my homework.
4. If it were not for coffee, I would be very sleepy in the morning.(커피가 없다면, 나는 아침에 매우 졸릴 거야.)
   • Were it not for coffee, I would be very sleepy in the morning.
   • But for coffee, I would be very sleepy in the morning.
   • Without coffee, I would be very sleepy in the morning.
5. If it were not for my friend, I would feel very lonely.(내 친구가 없다면, 나는 매우 외로울 거야.)
   • Were it not for my friend, I would feel very lonely.
   • But for my friend, I would feel very lonely.
   • Without my friend, I would feel very lonely.
