수의 일치 : 복수 취급하는 경우

1. both A and B 뒤 복수 취급

 

a. Both the teacher and the students are excited about the project.

• 선생님과 학생들 모두 그 프로젝트에 대해 신나 있다.

b. Both the cat and the dog need to be fed.

• 고양이와 개 모두 먹이를 줄 필요가 있다.

 

*  단.  하나의 개념을 나타낼 때, 단수취급  *

 

a. Slow and steady wins the race.

• 천천히 그리고 꾸준히 하는 것이 경주에서 이긴다.

b. Fish and chips is a popular dish in the UK.

• 피시 앤 칩스는 영국에서 인기 있는 요리이다.

c. Peanut butter and jelly is my favorite sandwich.

• 땅콩버터와 젤리는 내가 가장 좋아하는 샌드위치이다.

d. Bread and butter is a common breakfast.

• 빵과 버터는 흔한 아침 식사이다.

e. Macaroni and cheese is a comfort food for many people.

• 마카로니 앤 치즈는 많은 사람들에게 편안한 음식이다.

 

 

2. the + 형용사 뒤 복수 취급

 

a. The rich have a responsibility to help those in need.

• 부자들은 도움이 필요한 사람들을 도울 책임이 있다.

b. The elderly are often respected in many cultures.

• 많은 문화에서 노인들은 종종 존경받는다.

 

 

3. a number of 뒤 복수 취급

 

a. A number of students are participating in the competition.

• 많은 학생들이 그 대회에 참가하고 있다.

b. A number of books have been added to the library.

• 많은 책들이 도서관에 추가되었다.

단.The number of  복수명사 : ~~~ 의 수 ( 단수취급 한다.)

ex) The number of students here is 50.
